Sinhagad Fort, meaning “Lion’s Fort”, stands proudly on a hill about 35 kilometers from Pune. It is known for its strong structure and connection to many important battles in Maratha history. The most famous battle here was led by Tanaji Malusare, a brave warrior of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Tanaji fought fearlessly and captured the fort, but lost his life in the battle. Shivaji Maharaj then said,
“Gad ala pan Sinh gela” — “We won the fort, but lost the lion.”
The fort is a popular trekking and adventure spot. The climb to the top is enjoyable with cool breezes, trees, and scenic views along the way. Once you reach the top, the massive walls, old gateways, water tanks, and ruined structures take you back to historical times. A viewpoint called “Kalyan Darwaza” offers breathtaking views of the Sahyadri Mountains.
There are small food stalls at the top selling pithla bhakri, onion pakoras, and lemon juice that taste amazing after a long climb. The fresh air and peaceful atmosphere make the place a favorite weekend getaway for Pune residents.
Sinhagad Fort is perfect for those who love history, nature, trekking, and scenic views. Every step on this hill makes you feel proud of the Maratha bravery and strong spirit.
