Shaniwar Wada is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in Pune. It was built in 1732 and became the political and administrative center of the powerful Peshwas of the Maratha Empire. The grand entrance known as the Delhi Darwaza shows how important and powerful the fort once was. Even though a major fire destroyed many parts of the fort in the 1800s, the remaining walls and structures still stand proudly, telling stories of the Maratha rule.
Inside the fort complex, you will find beautiful stone pathways, strong bastions, manicured lawns, water fountains, and open courtyards where soldiers and leaders once gathered. The fort also holds memories of bravery and loyalty — especially of leaders like Baji Rao I and Nanasaheb Peshwa who ruled from here.
One of the most interesting attractions here is the Evening Light and Sound Show, which shares the history of the Marathas using lights, visuals, and narration. Visitors feel like they are traveling back in time and watching the glorious past unfold.
Shaniwar Wada is located in the center of Pune, making it easy to reach. Many tourists, history lovers, and students visit the fort to understand how Pune became an important city during the Maratha era. Walking inside Shaniwar Wada gives a strong feeling of pride and connection to India’s powerful heritage.
